Margot Boulet, Souleyman Alaphilippe, Caroline Queroli, Kylian Portal and Anaëlle Roulet are the five high-level athletes (in the fields of rowing, taekwondo, sabre fencing and swimming) receiving Groupe ADP support. An initiative that appeals to Groupe ADP, as partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These five French hopefuls, who are likely to compete in next year's Games, are members of the Insep Alumni club. They have been selected for their sporting prowess and the quality of their transition plans for when their high-level careers come to an end. Each year, the Groupe ADP Foundation awards student grants to top-level athletes who are enrolled in a training course leading to a qualification separate to their sporting careers. Watch the video portraits of the five athletes, three of whom are disabled.

AIRPORT MARKET DELIVERS!

CDGR de-icers, which are soon to be replaced, have been sold by Airport Market, the first marketplace for second-hand airport equipment, developed by SLA. Credit: Arnaud Gaulupeau for Groupe ADP.

Five de-icers have just been sold to an international company specialising in the sale and hire of ground service equipment. This is cause for celebration because the deal was arranged through Airport Market, the first marketplace dedicated to the sale of second-hand airport equipment, developed by the General Resources, Supply Chain & Procurement Division (SLA) in 2021. “This transaction was concluded at a sale price perfectly in line with market prices” , explains Xavier del Valle, Head of Airport Market. This sale also demonstrates the relevance of this circular economy project which has been rolled out on an international scale. “EUROWAGA*, held in Barcelona in June, was a fantastic opportunity to establish a large number of new contacts, particularly with airports in the northern hemisphere who are very interested in our approach, given the scope and quality of our offer”, continued Xavier del Valle.

* The ACI Europe / World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition (EUROWAGA) is a global gathering of airport leaders and aviation stakeholders.

BIM (BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING) METHOD APPLIED TO URBAN PLANNING

The Engineering and Capital Projects Division (ECP) is continuing to digitise its processes. Like architects, increasing numbers of urban planners are using BIM (Building Information Modelling). This 3D digital approach also has the advantage of providing and sharing a maximum amount of detailed information in real time, automating repetitive tasks and ensuring continuity throughout the various design phases of a project. “Urban planners do a lot of work on major infrastructures and master plans. Switching to BIM also makes it easier to work with the other departments, as the centralised digital mock-up means we can make better progress together. ” It can be applied to a wide range of areas, such as mobility, terminals, topography, etc. Training is provided for the ten or so planners in the department, who are supported by ECP's BIM managers in the creation of digital mock-ups.

PARIS-ORLY, SPEARHEADING FASTNET

Transavia and Air France will be key partners in the roll-out of the European FASTNet project at Paris-Orly. Credit: Sébastien Aubry.

FASTNet stands for Future Data Services for Airport and Network. Paris-Orly Airport has been chosen to demonstrate the operational added value of this pan-European project, which is part of the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR 3) joint undertaking. The aim of the project is to accelerate, through research and innovation, the establishment of an inclusive, resilient and sustainable European digital sky. “Our objective is to improve operations planning up to several months in advance”, explain Olivier Delain and Brankica Pesic Le Foll who work for the Operations Division. “FASTNet should make it easier to manage the allocation of resources, both landside and airside. ” This three-year project is being coordinated by the Iberian company Indra. It involves 11 partners including Eurocontrol, Air France-KLM and Transavia. It is subsidised to the tune of 70% by the European Commission and managed within Groupe ADP by the Operations Division (DGOA), in close collaboration with the Paris-Orly (ORYA) and Information Systems (DSIA) Divisions.

TRANSAVIA FRANCE REOPENS ITS PARIS-ORLY ROUTE TO EILAT

Transavia France will again fly between Eilat in Israel and Paris-Orly, every Sunday from 22 October 2023 to 24 March 2024. Transavia will have no direct competition on this route, with Irish low-cost airline Ryanair serving Eilat from Paris-Beauvais.

GLOBAL AIR TRAFFIC IN JULY APPROACHES 2019 LEVELS

The world's airlines enjoyed sustained activity in July 2023, their peak period in the northern hemisphere, reaching 95.6% of 2019 levels for the same month, according to the monthly report from the International Air Transport Association (Iata). This result was largely driven by domestic flights, which once again boosted the sector. According to Iata, air transport in 2023 should see passenger numbers almost return to pre-pandemic levels, at 4.35 billion compared with 4.54 billion in 2019.

BUSINESS AVIATION TAKES STEPS TO IMPROVE ITS IMAGE

Faced with the threat of new government taxes, the French National Federation of Merchant Aviation (FNAM) has asked consulting firm Arthur D. Little to carry out a review of the business aviation sector. Often criticised for its contribution to global warming and its image as a “luxury” activity, industry leaders are contesting plans to specifically tax private jets, arguing that their contribution to CO2 emissions is relatively small, and that 80% of business jet flights are for business rather than pleasure.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS SHUN GERMAN AIRPORTS

Although the German aviation sector is recovering from the health crisis, the upturn in activity is slower than elsewhere. The Association of German Airports (ADV) reports an 11% decline in international travellers since 2017, partly due to a limited supply of point-to-point connections in Europe, high taxes and location costs. Domestic flights are down 53% on 2019, while European traffic is up 20% on 2022, but remains 18.5% lower than in 2019.

CAMELINA, THE MIRACLE PLANT FOR AVIATION BIOFUEL IN FRANCE?

The first camelina crops intended for the production of biofuel for air transport in France are currently being harvested. Once filtered and hydrotreated, the oil contained in the seeds will be mixed with kerosene to produce aviation biofuel. The CO2 released when biofuel is burned in the aircraft engines is almost fully offset by the CO2 captured by camelina as it grows, resulting in an 80% to 86% reduction in the carbon footprint.
