WORLD PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS,
A VALUABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

The curtain has come down on the World Para Athletics Championships, which took place at Charléty stadium from 8 to 17 July. This competition offered us a taste of what we can expect for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, providing an opportunity to test our operational robustness and fine-tune our hospitality arrangements, particularly for passengers with reduced mobility. In this way, a large portion of Groupe ADP's customer care plan for 2024 was tested, involving the entire airport community. “Everything went really well, apart from a few issues at check-in”, explained Renaud Duplay, Deputy Managing Director of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport and Head of the 2024 OPG for Groupe ADP. “This event has clearly proven the need to pre-plan check-in operations, which will be the case at the Olympic Village. A big thank you to the teams who helped welcome the 1,300 athletes for these championships!" Valuable lessons were learnt with regard to access and transfers: access to the terminals with defined reserve bases for buses and lorries, regulations allowing vehicles used to transport people with disabilities or reduced mobility (PRM) to be dispatched without disrupting the flow of traffic, established pick-up and drop-off areas next to the terminals, etc.

It's official! Air France has signed a partnership agreement with the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee to become a partner of the Paris 2024 Games: “We are eager to contribute to the success of this global event. Paris 2024 resonates with Air France's ambitions and values. Now more than ever, we will showcase the best of France all over the world, promoting excellence, respect and inclusiveness”, announced Benjamin Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the Air France-KLM Group. Over the summer of 2024, the Air France teams in Paris and abroad will be working hard to prepare for the arrival into France of athletes and their sports equipment, supporters and the world’s media. They will pay particular attention to passengers with reduced mobility and those with disabilities. The French airline will also be using the check-in system set up at the Olympic and Paralympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis to enable athletes to complete their check-in formalities before travelling to the airport.

AN EXPERIMENT FOR RESTAURANTS DU CŒUR

Giving a second life to items prohibited in the aircraft cabin is the idea behind the experiment that has been running for a few weeks now at Paris-Charles de Gaulle, in partnership with the Restaurants du Cœur charity in Val-d'Oise. Crates have been introduced for prohibited items confiscated during security screening. This initiative is the result of close collaboration between the Citizen Commitment Division, the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Terminals Division and the security service provider Seris. “The most common items we are seeing are cosmetics, not perishables or water bottles”, explains Ophélie Poncet (CDG9), Logistics Flow and Waste Process Manager. “This trial has been well received by security staff, as it reduces conflicts with frustratedpassengers.” This experiment also enables us to reduce waste, as these items are usually taken away in the yellow bins (almost 20 tonnes each year). Since the launch of this trial, which will be extended to all terminals if successful, 800 kg of cabin-prohibited items have been collected and donated to the Restaurants du Cœur charity for redistribution to disadvantaged citizens.

TAV TECHNOLOGIES IMPROVES THE PASSENGER EXPERIENCE
AT ZAGREB

Zagreb Airport has acquired new IT equipment to enhance the customer experience and improve operational efficiency. Credit: Stéphane Sby Balmy for Groupe ADP.

TAV Technologies, a subsidiary of the TAV Airports Group, has rolled out new solutions to improve the passenger experience and operational efficiency at Zagreb Airport. The introduction of the Common Use Passenger Processing System, equipped with the PAX Analyzer solution for analysing and predicting passenger flows in real time, and the TDAS travel document authorisation system, means that airlines and the airport operator can now use the same IT equipment for check-in, boarding and passenger flow management. This solution will optimise airport operations and improve the customer experience, while reducing the number of IT tools used and the cost of maintaining them.

AIR FRANCE-KLM IN THE BLACK DESPITE INFLATION

Inflation, which has pushed up Air France-KLM's costs, has not discouraged customers from travelling, enabling the group to achieve record profitability and double its second-quarter net profit (€604 million) compared to last year. Air France, KLM and Transavia carried 24.7 million passengers over three months, 11% fewer than in the same period four years ago. Over 2023 as a whole, the group expects to offer 95% of its 2019 capacity, boosted by Transavia, which should grow by between 130% and 135% thanks to the expansion of its fleet. Air France-KLM expects to return to its pre-crisis capacity next year.

ITA AIRWAYS PREPARES FOR THE ARRIVAL OF LUFTHANSA

ITA Airways, the successor to Alitalia in the process of being taken over by Lufthansa, has taken a further step towards its privatisation by appointing a new Board of Directors, reduced to three members pending the arrival of the German giant. In May, the Italian government and Lufthansa signed an agreement under the terms of which the latter will acquire a 41% stake in the Italian state-owned airline, with the option to acquire the remaining 59% at a later stage. The agreement between ITA Airways and Lufthansa is subject to approval by the Directorate-General for Competition in Brussels.

THE LONGEST FLIGHTS IN THE WORLD

OAG (Official Aviation Guide) has published its list of the longest non-stop flights in July 2023. Top of the list is the New York (JFK) to Singapore Changi route, covering a distance of 15,332 km in just under 19 hours. The next flight to break the record for the longest non-stop air journey is likely to be in 2025, when Qantas will launch its 16,020 km non-stop New York to Sydney route which will take more than 20 hours.

US AIRLINES FLYING HIGH

US airlines broke long-standing records during the second quarter of 2023, thanks to strong demand, particularly on international routes. Delta Air Lines announced the best quarterly performance in its history, United Airlines tripled its profits and American Airlines had what it described as a “fantastic” quarter. All three matched or even exceeded market predictions and have raised their forecasts. Analysts are cautious about the remainder of the year, fearing a slowdown in demand and a rise in oil prices during the second half.

CANADIAN SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL FOR AIR FRANCE-KLM

Canadian company Consortium SAF+ is to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the Air France-KLM group. Consortium SAF+ is the leading producer of PtL (Power to Liquids) sustainable aviation fuel in North America, and is currently developing a commercial project in Quebec for Canadian aviation, so as to meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel within the context of international and European regulations to reduce CO2 emissions. The first deliveries of this e-fuel are scheduled for 2030.
