128 hectares - that’s the total surface area covered by the project to renovate Paris-Orly’s runway 2 - the equivalent of 180 football pitches! Following the preparatory phase, initial work will begin at the start of August and continue until mid-November. The following phase, which includes the demolition and reconstruction of the taxiways, W22 in particular, is expected to be completed in August 2024. The project is being managed by the ECP (Engineering & Capital Projects) Division. “The objective in terms of recycling materials is important”, explains Sylvain Tailler, Project Manager within ECPPI. “We will be reusing as many aggregates from Orly Airport as possible”, confirms Frédéric Nasri, Construction Manager within ECPPI. This runway, also known as 02/20, was commissioned in 1953 and is used in times of heavy traffic, for emergency procedures, and when work is being carried out on the main runways.

With the summer season upon us, the tangerine waistcoat scheme has just been relaunched at Paris-Orly. This scheme, run by volunteers, will be in place until 4 September under the guidance of the Operations Division, with a view to improving passenger care on busy days. Nearly fifty volunteers from various functional divisions are stationed in Arrivals and Departures in the terminals, as well as outside, near the car parks and entrances, in addition to the Paris-Orly operational teams. “This is an opportunity to enjoy a unique hands-on experience that benefits our passengers. We still need volunteers for the month of August; ideally people who can take time off work or volunteer at the weekends, with approval from their manager” , explained Guilhem Maruejol, graduate, Head of Continuous Improvement and Downgraded Modes within the APOC, and Gaëlle Beau, Operations Support Assistant (ORYO).

Work on the TBF baggage handling system has been completed at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. This work, which began last December, was carried out by the Baggage Division (CDGB) using its own resources, at a cost of €2 million. “The aim was to bring the system into compliance with the EDS (Explosives Detection System) standard in terms of security, so as to maintain processing capacity over the summer of 2023 pending the opening of new facilities, scheduled for 2024. Costs were kept under control through the recovery and reuse of certain elements” , explains Bruno Indino, Head of Operations for CDGB. The TBF will now benefit from an additional capacity of 1,200 baggage items per hour this summer, rising to 2,400 by the end of 2023. This work will improve the flexibility of the baggage sorting systems and the technical robustness of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

A FOURTH RUNWAY AT NEW DELHI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The fourth runway will ultimately provide the airport with the capacity to handle more aircraft movements as air traffic increases. Credit: DR.

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi, India, has just added a fourth runway and elevated taxiways (known as the Eastern Cross Taxiway) linking the airport’s northern and southern airfields. Officially opened on 14 July, the 2.1-kilometre Eastern Cross Taxiway reduces taxiing time after landing and before take-off, thus helping to reduce aircraft emissions and improve operational efficiency. IGIA, which is also the country’s largest airport, currently has 3 operational runways and handles over 1,200 aircraft movements a day. This makes it the only Indian airport to have an elevated taxiway with roads passing underneath it.

NORSE ATLANTIC AIRWAYS TO SERVE MIAMI THIS WINTER

Norse Atlantic has announced the opening of its new winter service between Paris and Miami, scheduled for launch on 11 December. The Norwegian low-cost airline will fly from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Florida four times a week. This will be its second route from the Paris hub, after launching its New York route.

ITA AIRWAYS ADDS MORE ROUTES TO PARIS

ITA Airways is increasing its services to the Paris airports this summer. Paris-Charles de Gaulle will benefit from 94 weekly rotations from Rome and Milan. And Paris-Orly will see 36 daily rotations from Milan. At the height of the summer season, in Paris and Nice, the Italian airline will be offering up to 172 flights a week to and from France.

THE NETHERLANDS AUTHORISED TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF FLIGHTS AT SCHIPHOL

The Dutch government can now reduce the number of flights to and from Schiphol international airport. This decision by the Amsterdam Court of Appeal confirms that the State followed the correct procedure in reducing the number of flights from 500,000 to 400,000 per year for the 2023-2024 period, thereby rejecting complaints from airlines.

EASYJET CANCELS 1,700 FLIGHTS THIS SUMMER

Easy Jet is cancelling approximately 1,700 flights between now and the end of the summer due to air traffic control restrictions in Europe. The affected flights are mainly into and out of London Gatwick Airport. The British airline stresses that these are minor changes, as more than 90,000 flights are scheduled for this period. It explains that these cancellations are due to tighter airspace as a result of the conflict in Ukraine and potential further strikes by air traffic controllers.
