INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY:
CONCRETE RESULTS

Species that are rarely seen in the Paris region are present at our airports: on the left, starfruit (damasonium alisma) growing at Toussus-le-Noble and on the right, the little ringed plover. Credit: Groupe ADP.

For several years now, Groupe ADP has been working to protect biodiversity at the Paris airports. In honour of International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, we present an overview of the key actions set out in the Pioneers for Trust roadmap. Biodiversity reserves have been created at Paris-Orly as part of a project to rewild the area around the RN7 (planting of 12,000 trees) and at Paris-Charles de Gaulle with the planting of a new 600 sq.m urban forest in the western technical area. At Paris-Le Bourget and the aerodromes, plans to combat invasive species have been put in place with a zero-phyto policy for the treatment of grass around the runway markers. Feedback from these projects has been used to develop the UAF (Union of French Airports)’s zero-phyto guide. Thanks to these actions, which also contribute to aviation safety, a new little ringed plover nest (a vulnerable species) has been observed in the vicinity of the runways at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. At Paris-Orly, a colony of tree sparrows and whinchats are the focus of special attention. A similar situation in Toussus-le-Noble, where the common reed bunting, common pochard and starfruit, birds and plants that are rare in the Paris region, have all been spotted.

SECURITY AT PARIS-LE BOURGET,
A COLLECTIVE AND COLLABORATIVE APPROACH

Sébastien Couturier, Director of Paris-Le Bourget, and Jérôme Harnois, the airport prefect, welcomed airport community stakeholders for a productive discussion regarding security-related issues. Credit: Nicolas Jelinski for Groupe ADP.

Organised by the Le Bourget management team, a security forum took place in close collaboration with the airport prefecture on 16 May. This meeting brought together the entire airport community with a view to promoting a well-established security culture among the airport's stakeholders. Themed workshops were led by the heads of the relevant State services (Prefecture, Air and Border Police, Air Transport Police). A roadmap will be drawn up to extend this approach over time, in the run-up to major events such as the Paris Air Show. Airport prefect Jérôme Harnois reiterated the importance of sharing information, alert systems and training for new recruits.

HYDERABAD RAJIV GANDHI, CHAMPION OF PUNCTUALITY

India's Rajiv Gandhi Airport in Hyderabad, managed by GMR Airports, has been named the world's most punctual airport, recording a punctuality rate of 90.43% for the month of March, according to the latest report published by aviation analysis company Sirius. In addition, Hyderabad is the only airport in the world to have passed the 90% mark. Pradeep Panicker, President and CEO of the airport, said this excellent result is due to “new technologies and procedures implemented since November”, when the airport was already in 4th position in the “large airport” category, with a punctuality rate of 88.44%. An Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC), fast track check-in and security, self-service check-in kiosks, e-boarding, and video analysis have helped to improve the airport's performance and increase flight punctuality.

INDIA, A BOOMING AERONAUTICS MARKET

The Indian government plans to invest €11 billion by 2025 in upgrading the country’s airports and meeting the growing needs of its domestic and international passengers. Approximately 2,200 aircraft will be ordered over the next 20 years, providing opportunities for manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. India is currently the world's third largest civil aviation market after the US and China.

PLANE SPOTTERS: VALUABLE ALLIES FOR THE AIR TRANSPORT POLICE

The French Air Transport Police (GTA) has embarked on an innovative project called “Spotter Alerte” which involves working with plane spotters, i.e. aviation enthusiasts who observe and photograph aircraft. They will have direct contact with the safety units on site and will be responsible for reporting any suspicious behaviour. This partnership will strengthen the surveillance and safety of airport infrastructures and will contribute to the prevention of malicious acts and the protection of airports.

PATROUILLE DE FRANCE CELEBRATES ITS 70TH BIRTHDAY

The Patrouille de France (PAF), the precision aerobatics demonstration unit of the French Air and Space Force, known for its appearances during the Bastille Day military parade, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. This flagship of the air force, a symbol of the French Republic, took part in its first rally in Algiers on 17 May 1953. Over the past seven decades, the PAF has used iconic aircraft including the Fouga Magister and the Alpha Jet. You can see the legendary French squadron for yourself at the Paris Air Show in June.

PROTEST AGAINST THE LILLE-LESQUIN AIRPORT EXTENSION

Nearly 400 people took part in a protest against the extension of Lille-Lesquin Airport, demanding a “cap on the number of flights” and a “night-time curfew”. The extension and modernisation project includes the expansion of the terminal building, the creation of a new car park and the widening of the main runway, to increase passenger numbers from 2.2 million in 2019 to 3.9 million in 2039.
