As it does every year, winter service has resumed at our airports, with the aim of ensuring they continue to run smoothly in the event of snow. The winter service teams are ready to clear snow and ice from the runways, taxiways, aircraft stands and airport access roads. For the 2023/2024 season, more than 480 volunteers have stepped forward at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and 300 at Paris-Orly. Paris-Charles de Gaulle now has 171 snow clearing machines and 50 de-icers, several of which are hybrids. These new machines, acquired by the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airside Operations and Facilities Division (CDGR), are capable of de-icing 15 to 20 aircraft and are fully electric, meaning they emit 80% to 85% less CO2 emissions depending on operating conditions. “We de-iced more than 150 flights on 3 December by opening ten de-icing bays”, explains Alain Gabry (CDGR), Head of the Winter Maintenance Department at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. At Paris-Orly, 77 snow clearing vehicles are ready for operation, including two new large-capacity spreaders that can spread both liquid and solid de-icing products.

The Altaï building at Paris-Charles de Gaulle, soon to be the new base for the remote commercial operations centre teams and the Paris-Charles de Gaulle crisis operations centre, has undergone an innovative and sustainable renovation involving the reuse of certain materials. The operation, carried out by the Project Management Division (CDGM) and Mobius, has enabled the recovery of nearly 2,300 sq.m of false floors which, once removed, were refurbished and reused in the same project. This initiative is in line with Groupe ADP's environmental strategy, which aims to reduce waste and limit the use of raw materials in renovation projects.

Labrador Ethics & Compliance, the Labrador Group's risk and compliance subsidiary, has published the second edition of the "Transparency Awards Ethics & Compliance 2023". It follows a study on the transparency of the key ethics and compliance documents of SBF 120 companies, i.e. their Code of Ethics, Anti-Corruption Code of Conduct, Vigilance Plan and Ethics System. This year, Groupe ADP was one of three companies nominated for their Vigilance Plans, the other two being Renault and Air Liquide. The award was presented to Air Liquide, which is also a partner of the Group. “In addition to our legal duty of vigilance obligation, the Vigilance Plan is the result of a collaborative effort between the Group's various players, through which we aim to share with all our stakeholders, in a transparent and accessible manner, the measures we are taking to identify and prevent risks of harm to people and the environment”, explains Valérie Zalmanski, Duty of Vigilance Project Manager in the Ethics and Data Protection Division. In her words: “This nomination represents a significant collective step forward, particularly as we move towards the entry into force of the European Directive on the Duty of Vigilance.”

APICS, the Asia Pacific Region Innovation & Capacity Building Symposium 2023, welcomed the Groupe ADP teams to Hong Kong in December. The event was an opportunity for Franck Le Gall, Groupe ADP’s Chief Airport Operations Officer, to take part in a round table discussion on “Innovation on the ground - Airport operations” and to reiterate that the forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games represent a powerful catalyst for the Group. “What stands out in particular is the innovative work underway on Advanced Air Mobility and the use of hydrogen, drawing on our own expertise and our strategic partnerships. This revolutionary approach not only reinforces our commitment to cutting-edge solutions, but also positions us at the forefront of sustainable practices in the aerospace industry”, said Franck Le Gall.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS' RIGHT TO STRIKE: LAW ENACTED

At the end of December last year, the reform of strike rules for air traffic controllers in France was enshrined in law. It follows the adoption of the bill by the French Parliament on 15 November and the judgement of compliance declared by the Constitutional Council on 21 December. The law now requires all airport staff performing duties “whose absence is likely to have a direct impact on the operation of flights” to individually declare their intention to strike no later than noon two days beforehand.

A NEW LOW-COST AIRLINE IN MEXICO

A new airline, run by the Mexican army, has begun operating at Felipe Angeles Airport (AIFA) in Mexico. This airline has risen from the ashes. Originally founded in 1921, it went bankrupt in 2010. But last August, the country's government agreed to buy it back for 815 million pesos, equal to roughly $48 million.

BULGARIA AND ROMANIA TO BE PARTIALLY INTEGRATED INTO THE SCHENGEN AREA

The 27 Member States of the European Union (EU) have unanimously agreed to cease internal border controls at Bulgaria and Romania’s air and sea borders from 31 March. This decision marks the end of twelve years of negotiations. A further decision is expected shortly regarding the date for the lifting of controls at internal land borders.

FRANCE SEEKS TO WIN BACK CHINESE TOURISTS

Olivia Grégoire, the French Minister for Tourism, has travelled to China to reassure Chinese customers and encourage them to return to France. There are numerous obstacles in place, including reduced air routes, rising ticket prices, visa problems and security fears. This visit is particularly symbolic as it takes place in the year of the sixtieth anniversary of bilateral relations between China and France, and in the run-up to the hosting of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
