At what is now a permanent fixture in the calendar, the airports have presented the upcoming IATA season. At Paris-Orly, the spring-summer season was presented on 21 March to the partners: airlines, ground handers, service providers, etc. This important milestone allows them to share a global vision in the context of continued traffic recovery. “2023 is shaping up to be a dynamic year, with demand for travel continuing unabated”, says Justine Coutard, Managing Director of Paris-Orly Airport. This bodes well for traffic, which is expected to be higher than in 2019. The number of international destinations will be boosted by Azul, a Brazilian airline, which will be serving Sao Paulo daily from 27 April. “This season is full of operational challenges, such as the work to bring the security facilities up to standard 3 (EDS3) ”, continues Justine Coutard. “We have been working on the robustness of the operating model to ensure optimal conditions for the airlines.” Also noteworthy is the announcement of the arrival of service provider Securitas as part of the renewal of the security contracts.

I am hopeful of a great season, and we will do everything we can to make it a success”, Valérie Senentz, Terminal Director at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, told the partners at the end of the spring-summer season presentation meeting on 23 March. Operations management, customer journey and experience, networks and access, baggage processes, infrastructure, works, traffic... All themes were addressed, notably through joint presentations with the Border Police and Customs. This season is shaping up well, as confirmed by Edouard Mathieu (CDGD), Head of Development and Partnerships: “Traffic volumes are not decreasing. We have recovered 98% of 2019 passenger traffic and 95% of morning peak movements. ” While the flight schedules submitted by the airlines indicate a summer period almost on par with that of 2019, recovery in China remains moderate. However, the reopening of Terminal 2D on 18 April will provide additional capacity, notably by welcoming Air Canada and Air Algérie, which will transfer some of its flights from Paris-Orly over the summer. We will also be significantly increasing the number of PARAFE gates in the terminals before the summer.

A seminar was organised by GMR Airports in New Delhi's Aerocity, at the initiative of Fabien Lawson, GMR Group's Chief Operating Officer. The objective was to share best practices and establish synergies between the three Indian airports operated by GMR; Hyderabad, Goa and New Delhi. It was an opportunity for the operational, technical, security and airside managers of GMR Airports to come together. Three topics were addressed, including the creation of an Airport Operations Centre (APOC), the quality of the data used to better manage operational performance and forecasting and real-time capacities, and finally, the operational excellence model, presented by Franck Le Gall (DGOX) and Nathalie Vairel (DGOM). “This approach concerns all One Group airports”, explains Nathalie Vairel, Director of the Airport Network Monitoring Centre. “This proposed operational framework makes sense, in terms of capitalisation and sharing, to support the creation of APOCs in New Delhi and Hyderabad and the transformation of GMR Airports' operations.”

FULL-YEAR EXTENSION OF AIR TAHITI NUI’S NEW SERVICE FROM SEATTLE TO PARIS

Following the inauguration of the Papeete-Seattle route in October and the announced extension to Paris-Charles de Gaulle of the twice-weekly service for the summer of 2023, Air Tahiti Nui has just announced that this schedule will continue throughout the forthcoming winter season. From 12 June 2023, this new service to and from Paris will be coupled with five scheduled rotations via Los Angeles, allowing Air Tahiti Nui to offer a total of seven flights per week between Papeete and Paris from June to September 2023.

THE MOST POPULAR AIRPORTS IN MARCH

As we approach the summer season, the ranking of the top ten European airports by seat capacity is once again dominated by London, followed by Istanbul and Paris. In March 2023, airlines scheduled over 4 million seats at London Heathrow, over 3.6 million at the new Istanbul Airport and just over 3 million at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. Compared to 2019, Madrid-Barajas has climbed two places to fourth place ahead of Frankfurt, which has dropped three places. Amsterdam and Munich are also down, occupying positions 6 and 8, while Barcelona has gained one place to seventh.

FRENCH AIRPORTS: RECOVERY DRIVEN BY LOW-COST TRAFFIC

Although they have almost doubled their passenger numbers in one year (+91.8% compared to 2021), in 2022 the French airports registered just under 174 million passengers, 18.8% less than in 2019. This recovery has been driven by low-cost traffic, which accounts for 43% of metropolitan traffic, i.e. more than 69 million passengers, whereas it accounted for 35% of this traffic in 2019, virtually returning to its pre-crisis level, while traditional traffic remains 28.8% down on its 2019 level.

AIR FRANCE: FEWER FLIGHTS THAN PLANNED TO CHINA

Air France has postponed the increase of its scheduled flights to China until May, at the earliest. The current four flights per week to Beijing and Shanghai will therefore remain unchanged in April. Although its summer schedule provided for daily flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and the airports of Beijing-Capital, Shanghai-Pudong, and Hong Kong-Chek Lap Kok by early July 2023, the Chinese authorities have refused to allow the French airline to increase its frequency for the month of April.
